Wilmington Health Associates Brings Dr. Mark Pithan to Leland
By Hilary Brady

Wilmington Health Associates (WHA), a group of more than 100 physicians, has been offering comprehensive healthcare to the residents of Wilmington, Leland, Carolina Beach and Porters Neck since 1971. Providing superior medical care in the most cost-effective way has been WHA’s mission since its inception. From cardiology, neurology and gastroenterology to dermatology, pediatrics and family medicine, Wilmington Health Associates has made a significant impact on the availability of specialized healthcare services in the community. And, now, Wilmington Health is expanding its services in Northern Brunswick County.

Wilmington Health Associates’ Family Medicine office, at 117-H Village Road in Leland near Food Lion, is offering neurology and diagnostic testing services by WHA’s Dr. Mark Pithan. Consultations by referral are currently available every Monday at the Leland location, in addition to the regular primary-care services available throughout the week.

The group hopes to add another day to this schedule, offering these services twice weekly. For Brunswick-area patients who experience unexplained headaches, numbness and a variety of other neurological disorders, Dr. Pithan provides diagnostic EMG testing and easy access to a specialist without having to travel across the bridge into Wilmington. Dr. Pithan is double board certified with expertise in multiple areas of neurology, including neuromuscular and sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, snoring, muscular dystrophy, carpal tunnel and pinched nerves.

Dr. Pithan and his wife moved to the Wilmington area last fall from Madison, Wisconsin, and are already enjoying the warmer weather. With his medical education from Southern Illinois University and his residency and internship at University of Wisconsin in neurology and internal medicine (respectively), Dr. Pithan is a welcome addition to the WHA team of highly respected specialists.

In addition to his time spent helping those with neurological and sleep disorders, Dr. Pithan and his wife keep busy by helping dogs. Traveling to South Carolina to rescue a Newfoundland and tackling puppyhood with a husky chocolate Lab rescue are just two examples of their doggy dedication. Perhaps the most inspiring of his traits is his compassion for mission work. The Pithans travel to Africa every year to set-up and work in medical clinics for the people of Bisil and Ongata Rongai.

“It’s a life-changing experience. One that you can’t put into words,” explains Dr. Pithan. The Pithans partner with Beacon of Hope, a group located in Nairobi, Kenya, to “bring hope to women affected and infected with HIV/AIDS.” In one day alone, they treated more than 2,000 patients. Setting up a pharmacy, offering testing and minor procedures are just some of the ways that the group of doctors brings hope and healing to these locals.

Whether Dr. Pithan is saving lives in Africa, rescuing puppies in the Southeast or easing the pain of those in Brunswick County, one thing is for certain: This doctor has both talent and a heart of gold.
